For the uninitiated, an Expo is a global gathering for people to share their ideas, showcase innovation, inspire collective collaboration and celebrate human imagination.
Expos are generally organized every five years, lasting for about six months. The very first Expo took place in London, United Kingdom, at The Crystal Palace in 1851. Back then, it was known as The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations. Now known as the Expo, at that time, it catered to the industrial field and was identified as an industrial exhibition, to showcase and encourage technological advancement in France. It then spread to other countries, consequently, the first real World Expo was held in 1851.
Where do you think things like the ice cream cone, the Ferris wheel and electricity to the masses was showcased? It was at the Expos / Fairs of the world.
Why have Expos?
For obvious reasons, they bring to the forefront the latest in innovations and genius ideas from across the world, for the general public to consume. For exhibitors, it is an opportunity to showcase their brands, get their foot into the proverbial door, build a client base, network with industry vendors and colleagues, and basically look at what their competitors are doing.
How is it good for an economy or commerce of a nation?
Firstly, it attracts a huge number of visionaries and inventors to your country, thereby, putting it on the world map an elevating the country’s pride at the same time. Being a host (country) to an Expo has many advantages, the most important one being, generating and cultivating ties with nations possessing high potential of contributing to the world.
